Space!

It was so lovely to see everyone after the half term break. We all had a great first back seeing all our friends and we have all thoroughly enjoyed playing in our new sand pit :)

This week in Puffins we have started our new topic 'Above and Under the Clouds' and our focus for the next three weeks is on Space. We started reading a book called 'Astro Girl' and we learnt about astronauts, asteroids, zero gravity and a lady called Mae Jemison. We got really excited to explore our new 'Space Station/rocket' role play. We even had alien masks to act out lots of exciting scenarios.

In Phonics Puffins have looked at the 'ue' digraph and how it makes the ue sound in due but the 'oo' sound in clue. We also recapped the split digraphs, reading and writing. Our new tricky words this week are only and old.

In Phonics Pufflings have been listening to rhyming books such as; Julia Donaldson – The Gruffalo, What the ladybird heard and Kes Gray's books 'Oi Frog'

In Maths Puffins have been busy recapping on measurement. We recapped length, height and time. Puffins had me seeing how many times I could run up and down the hall in 1 minute! Lots of fun :) We have also focused lots on days of the week.

In Maths Pufflings have been counting objects, hunting for hidden objects and counting how many they have found. Pufflings also found the correct numeral to match the amount.

We were really lucky to see pictures of our finished Trex and we were blown away with how amazing it looked. We can't wait to go and see it in the Summer and for you to see it too. We are just deciding on a name, there were some great suggestions:)

A great first week back to school :)

Mental health week and Dinosaur day

This week has been busy with lots of things to learn about. On Monday we had a carousel all about Mental health . We drew pictures about things that made us happy, things that we could do for others to make them happy, we did some mindfulness colouring and yoga. We also learnt about e-safety and how we can stay safe online, lots of information was sent home for parents to look at and share with their child/ren. We also had an amazing Dinosaur day, where the children dressed up and took part in a carousel of activities in their house groups.

In Phonics this week puffins have been learning the o-e and u-e split digraphs and to read the tricky words; my, by and one. Everyone did really well.

Pufflings have been using the same instrument (our bodies) taking turns to be the piper and lead the rest of the children around, using sounds.

In Maths, Puffins have been concentrating on doubles to 14 and half of 10, 8, 6, 4, 2.

In Maths, Pufflings have been counting and matching numerals to objects.

In Topic we have finished our work on Penguins and Antarctica and the children remembered lots of facts which they enjoyed sharing with each other.

The children had lots of fun in their PE lesson, they are all getting on so well using the equipment. Forest school was gorgeous under the blue skies and the warmth of some sunshine.

We hope you all have an amazing half term with your children. We look forward to seeing you after half term.

Chinese New Year

This week has been a very busy week! We have been learning all about Chinese New Year and how people get their houses ready to celebrate; they tidy their house, decorate their home with red and cook lots of special foods. We decided that because it was the year of the Tiger, to bake Tiger cookies. We made enough for the school and we all thought they were yummy.  We have also had loads of fun learning new games, everyone is doing really well at turn taking and congratulating children who win :)

In Phonics, Puffins we have started to look at the split digraphs a-e, e-e and i-e. The children did really well to read and write some words with these sounds in. We also learnt to read the tricky words no, go and so.

In Phonics, Pufflings have been repeating sounds.

In Maths, Puffins have been looking at capacity and used a standard cup to work out which container held the most and which held the least. We used language such as full, half full, empty, nearly full or empty. We have also been looking at the composition of the numbers 6 and 7 using dominos and we had a go at creating our own eg 4 on one side and 3 on the other.

In Maths, Pufflings have been concentrating on number recognition and matching.

In Topic we had a few days break from Antarctica whilst we learnt about Chinese New Year. We then spent some time finishing off our penguins. They looked amazing.

The children had a great PE lesson and did lots of climbing, we talked lots about how to use the equipment safely.

Jolly Phonics books have now been sent home to all Reception children. Please keep them in your child's wallet and I will swap them over on Monday. Please continue to get a couple of other books from the trolley on Fridays.

Thank you to all the parents who returned their child's library book so they could have a new one. Please remember that we need them returned by Tuesday or we are unable to issue a new one.

After half term we will need some boxes, standard shoe boxes, cereal boxes, any good cube or cuboid boxes ready for some modelling. If you have any, please could you take them to the office. Many thanks :)
